Marble or Granite Countertop?

Having a great choice of countertops made of diverse materials one can ask himself a question: ‘Which countertop to choose?’. Really, a market of building materials offers all kinds of solutions on this problem. Here we shall focus on comparison of two expensive natural stone materials – marble and granite.

It turned out so that granite countertops are more often used for kitchens while those of marble – for bathrooms. It is not just mere chance. Let us compare their characteristics.

Virtually granite is a rock based on minerals of magmatic origin, such as quartz and mica. Its features are high strength, durability, chemical resistance and diversity of colors. That is why granite is more preferable in kitchens than marble, which is apt to retain the traces of vinegar, wine and the like. More so, due to its soft structure marble is easily liable to scratching by knives, what can’t be said about granite.

At the same time the porosity of marble makes it indispensable in bathrooms where all surfaces become slippery because of high moisture. As far back as in Ancient Rome it was noticed that articles made of marble possessed the bactericidal properties which prevented diseases.

It should be noted that marble countertops are also chosen for kitchens sometimes, but they should be treated with specific protective agents from harmful chemical and mechanical impacts. Better not to put any hot articles on them (one should use special trivets) and clean the surface more often especially the countertops of light tint.

Several words should be said about ordering the granite or marble countertops. Usually the dimensions of stone plates are 2.5 – 3.3 m long and up to 2.5 m wide. Therefore, depending on dimensions and shape the countertops can be made of several pieces of the stone plate. A countertop formed of several pieces will look as one unit owing to the choice of joints in barely visible places, and to the special strong adhesive which can be easily painted to match the countertop color.
